Sanctions Relief Opens Door for Iran Cargo
This purchase signals a shift in India's energy strategy, allowing it to access Iranian supplies after avoiding them since 2019 due to Western sanctions. The U.S. government's temporary easing of sanctions on Tehran's energy exports created this opportunity. The tanker Aurora, carrying the LPG, is headed for India's west coast at Mangalore port. India has been vulnerable to disruptions in energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane that has seen increased tension.
Indian Firms to Share Cargo, Pay in Rupees
The cargo will be shared by Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, the country's main fuel distributors. The purchase is being managed through a trader, with payments reportedly made in Indian Rupees. This method avoids dollar transactions, simplifying the financial process amid the sanctions.
Official Unaware, But Cargo Offers Supply Hope
Despite these developments, an official from the federal shipping ministry stated Wednesday he was unaware of any Iranian cargoes being procured. India, the world's second-largest LPG importer, is facing significant domestic supply challenges. Last year, imports accounted for about 60% of its 33.15 million metric tons annual consumption, with the Middle East as the primary source. Securing Iranian supply, even temporarily, could provide much-needed relief for retailers and help shield consumers from price increases.
