India Poised for Global Energy Leadership Amid Transition: SEforALL CEO
Overview

Clean energy investment momentum will persist, driven by economic fundamentals, according to Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of SEforALL. She highlights India's strong potential to lead the global energy transition and in the Global South, citing its credibility and focus on implementation. SEforALL is prioritizing collaboration and innovative financial tools for developing nations.

Clean energy investment momentum is set to continue, irrespective of policy shifts in major economies, as economic fundamentals overwhelmingly favor the transition. Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and special representative of the UN secretary-general for Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), stated that the clean energy revolution, particularly in technology investment, is unstoppable when it makes economic sense.

India's Global Role

Ogunbiyi highlighted India's strong position to lead at the intersection of climate action, energy transition, and development. She cited India's credibility across the Global South and its emphasis on implementation and measurable outcomes. India has achieved enough for other nations to benefit from its experience, she noted.

Financial Innovation and Collaboration

The SEforALL chief called for a significant step-up in innovative financial tools. Developing countries require financing instruments designed around local market realities, moving beyond one-size-fits-all global templates. Strengthening cooperation among developing nations is a central priority for SEforALL, facilitating exchanges with countries like Kenya and Nigeria. Deeper dialogue and understanding of cultural contexts are deemed essential for effective collaboration.

Technology Transfer and Efficiency

Ogunbiyi suggested that developing nations can collaborate and share technical know-how on India's growing use of AI-based tools. These technologies can improve the efficiency of power systems and renewable energy networks, with practical applications like mapping cooling demand in urban centers. She also emphasized training and capacity building in clean energy technologies, noting India's strong, visible R&D focus and adaptation of solutions to local conditions.

NTPC Partnership

State-run NTPC Ltd. has partnered with SEforALL to develop a comprehensive energy transition roadmap, underscoring India's engagement with global clean energy institutions. Energy efficiency, Ogunbiyi added, is critical for developing economies, often representing the fastest and most cost-effective way to meet rising energy demand while advancing climate goals. India remains a priority country for SEforALL's work in this area.
