Energy Security Assurance
The government has publicly affirmed India's robust energy security, successfully meeting peak electricity demand and maintaining uninterrupted fuel supplies despite escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Ministry of Power officials highlighted that all thermal power plants are operating at full capacity, bolstered by adequate coal stocks, with no reported shortages. This resilience is crucial as power demand has surged by approximately 8% this year, partly attributed to the expanded renewable energy capacity.
Capacity Expansion and Stockpiles
To further fortify supply chains, New Delhi is set to add 22,000 MW of power generation capacity over the next three months, drawing from thermal, solar, wind, hydro, and gas-based sources. Imported coal-based plants are also functioning smoothly, supported by substantial coal stockpiles amounting to around 55 billion tonnes. This proactive approach aims to buffer against potential disruptions stemming from international events.
Stable Fuel Availability
On the fuel front, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has provided assurances of stable domestic LPG and fuel availability, including petrol and diesel, with no dry-outs reported. Commercial LPG deliveries have recovered to approximately 70% of pre-crisis levels, with significant daily sales of smaller LPG cylinders. Easing norms for purchasing 5 kg cylinders without address proof aims to improve accessibility. Furthermore, domestic natural gas usage is being prioritized, with consumers encouraged to transition from LPG to PNG for enhanced efficiency.
Geopolitical Monitoring and Seafarer Safety
Concurrently, the Ministry of External Affairs is closely monitoring the West Asia situation, expressing concern over civilian casualties and reiterating the priority of civilian protection. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed the safety of Indian seafarers in the region, reporting no incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels in the preceding 24 hours. A significant number of Indian seafarers, over 1,927 to date, have been repatriated, underscoring the government's commitment to citizen welfare amidst global maritime challenges. Coordinated inter-ministerial efforts are central to maintaining energy security and stable supplies.
