IGL to Supply PNG to Northern Railway in Delhi-NCR

Indraprastha Gas Limited has partnered with Northern Railway to supply Piped Natural Gas to 22 facilities. The project aims for an initial supply of 3,000 standard cubic metres per day to replace diesel and LPG. Investors should monitor whether this expansion into institutional clients can offset the current profit margin pressure caused by changes in government gas allocation policies.

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has entered into an agreement with Northern Railway to provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to 22 railway facilities across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. The project aims to supply an initial volume of 3,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD). This gas will replace diesel and LPG currently used in the railway's base kitchens, laundries, and rest houses, helping the company secure a stable institutional customer base.

This partnership is a strategic move for IGL to diversify its revenue. Traditionally, the company has depended significantly on the automotive segment, specifically CNG sales for vehicles. By moving into the institutional space through projects like the government's PNG Drive 3.0, the company is attempting to build more predictable, long-term demand. The company has indicated that these volumes could scale up to 10,000 SCMD as the project expands to include other locations such as Ajmer and Muzaffarnagar.

However, investors should consider the broader sector challenges currently facing city gas distribution companies. Recently, there has been significant pressure on the profit margins of firms like IGL due to changes in the government's domestic natural gas allocation policy. These allocation cuts force companies to source a larger portion of their gas from more expensive, imported sources, which can impact profitability. While new institutional contracts like this railway deal help in expanding total volume, the actual benefit to the company's bottom line will depend on how efficiently it manages these rising gas costs.

The company’s focus on increasing PNG penetration is a clear effort to capture more urban market share. Expanding the pipeline network across new districts requires significant capital spending, and the returns on this investment will be closely watched by the market. As the company rolls out incentives and discounts to attract more households and institutional clients, the key monitorable for the next few quarters will be whether this volume growth can successfully balance out the rising input costs in a challenging regulatory environment.
