Hardeep Singh Puri Announces India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that Kolkata will host India Energy Week 2027 from January 28–31. The event focuses on energy innovation and security as India works to shield households from global supply volatility. This government strategy involves expanding domestic refining capacity and diversifying energy import sources to manage the country’s heavy dependence on foreign crude oil.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has announced that Kolkata will host the India Energy Week 2027, scheduled for January 28–31. The event aims to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and energy companies to discuss partnerships in technology and future energy policy. The minister stated that the event serves as a platform to showcase India’s growing role in the global energy market.

Building Energy Resilience

The minister highlighted that India has focused on protecting domestic consumers from global price shocks through sustained infrastructure growth. Despite the country relying on imports for roughly 87% of its crude oil requirements, the government has prioritized the expansion of refining capacity and the diversification of import sources. This strategy is designed to prevent domestic shortages even when international markets face supply chain disruptions.

Key Government Initiatives

To improve long-term energy security, the government is focusing on multiple initiatives. These include the GOBARdhan program, which aims to convert organic farm and city waste into bio-energy, and the Samudra Manthan program, which focuses on developing energy infrastructure along the coast and port areas. Furthermore, the expansion of piped natural gas networks continues to be a central part of the government’s plan to improve access and reduce reliance on traditional fuels. These projects are intended to create a more stable energy mix, helping to manage volatility in future market cycles.

Why Investors Watch Energy Policy

The India Energy Week serves as an important calendar event for investors in the energy sector. It often provides insights into government capital spending plans, potential partnerships between public and private companies, and shifts in policy that could impact profitability for energy, refining, and gas utility companies. The government's decision to host this edition in West Bengal is also seen as an attempt to leverage the state’s industrial history and logistics network for future energy projects.

Investors typically look at such events to understand the pace of infrastructure development and the government's long-term commitment to specific energy technologies. The upcoming discussions in Kolkata are expected to outline how the country intends to balance economic growth with its transition toward cleaner energy sources while maintaining supply stability.
