Landmark Battery Storage System Commissioned
GoodEnough Energy brought its 7 Gigawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) online Tuesday, marking a new record for India. The facility, located in Uttar Pradesh, is the nation's largest and is designed to bolster the stability of its burgeoning renewable energy grid.
Driving India's Green Ambitions
The commissioning arrives as India pushes to meet its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030. Experts estimate the country will need approximately 230 GWh of energy storage to support this transition. This new BESS is a critical development in reducing the country's reliance on imported battery systems, primarily from China.
Government Support and Future Growth
Launched in 2023 with an initial investment of ₹4.5 billion ($49.4 million), GoodEnough Energy is not resting on its laurels. The company has outlined plans to scale up its BESS capacity to 25 GWh within the next three years. This expansion aligns with government initiatives, including a ₹94 billion funding approval in 2023 to support domestic BESS manufacturing through capital cost subsidies of up to 40%.
