Fermi Names Lee McIntire CEO to Lead Project Matador

Fermi Inc. has appointed former TerraPower executive Lee McIntire as its new CEO to oversee the construction of its Project Matador AI campus. The move follows a $6.5 billion lease deal with TensorWave, which has driven a 23% rise in the company’s stock. Investors are now focused on how the new leadership manages the company's transition from development to large-scale infrastructure delivery.

Fermi Inc. has officially named Lee McIntire as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 11, 2026. This leadership change marks a significant shift for the firm as it moves from the conceptual phase to the construction and power delivery stages of its Project Matador AI campus in Amarillo, Texas. McIntire, who previously served as an independent director on Fermi's board and held top roles at CH2M Hill and TerraPower, replaces co-founder Toby Neugebauer, who departed the company earlier this year.

The timing of the announcement aligns with a major commercial breakthrough. On Monday, Fermi confirmed it had signed a 15-year binding lease agreement with TensorWave. The deal is valued at approximately $6.5 billion and involves the provision of 222 megawatts of power capacity, with an option to scale to over 650 megawatts. This contract serves as a foundation for the company's revenue goals and has helped the stock price surge by nearly 23% since the announcement.

Strategic Shift to Execution

The appointment of McIntire is central to what the company calls its "Fermi 2.0" strategy. Fermi's Chairman, Marius Haas, noted that the company's next phase is no longer just about planning, but about executing large, complex engineering projects on time and within budget. Given McIntire’s 40-year track record in infrastructure and nuclear innovation, the board is looking to him to provide the operational stability needed to build the facility and ensure it meets the power requirements of high-demand AI data centers.

Investor Risks and Financial Context

While the leadership change and new contract are positive developments, investors are closely monitoring the transition risks. Fermi is currently in a phase where it must spend significant amounts of money to build the necessary infrastructure before it starts receiving the bulk of its revenue from tenants. As a company that is currently pre-revenue, managing capital reserves and project timelines will be essential to avoid potential delays or cost overruns.

The market reaction reflects optimism about the new CEO's experience in navigating these exact challenges. However, the company’s financial health and capital allocation plans will remain under scrutiny. Investors are now waiting for the company's second-quarter financial results, scheduled for release on August 13, 2026. This update is expected to provide more clarity on the company's cash position and the roadmap for Project Matador's construction timeline.
