Founded earlier this year by former Uber Freight executive Kofi Asante, the company aims to address power supply challenges at ports by utilizing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) mounted on floating barges.

Technology and Operational Design

The company’s proposed solution centers on using established water-cooled nuclear technology. The reactor operates within a closed loop, where heat is used to produce steam, which then drives a turbine to generate electricity. By placing these reactors on barges, Bluecore intends to create a mobile energy source that can be transported by ship to different port facilities. This mobility could potentially simplify the logistics of deploying power infrastructure compared to traditional land-based plants. The design is intended to power approximately 15,000 homes per unit, with the capacity to be connected to the local power grid through subsea cables.

The design incorporates safety measures such as clad uranium, robust steel pressure vessels, and concrete shielding to manage radiation and operational risks.

While the company highlights the use of mature, long-refueling-interval nuclear technology, it enters a sector with significant inherent hurdles. Nuclear projects are capital-intensive and face long lead times due to strict safety and environmental regulations. For startups in this space, the primary investor monitorables include the ability to navigate complex global maritime and nuclear safety laws, the cost of manufacturing these specialized vessels, and the technical challenge of ensuring the safety of a reactor in a moving maritime environment.
