The Bureau of Indian Standards has released new laboratory testing norms for hydrogen purity in fuel-cell vehicles. This update aims to ensure long-term efficiency for PEM fuel-cell systems, which are highly sensitive to fuel contamination. These standards are a critical step in supporting India's National Green Hydrogen Mission to scale clean mobility by 2030.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced updated quality benchmarks for hydrogen used in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel-cell vehicles. As India pushes to build a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this move establishes a standardized technical framework for measuring fuel purity. These norms specify the methods laboratories must use to detect trace impurities that can severely damage or reduce the performance of fuel-cell components.
Protecting Fuel-Cell Technology Performance
Unlike internal combustion engines, PEM fuel-cell systems are extremely sensitive to contaminants. The presence of even minute levels of substances such as ammonia, sulfur compounds, carbon monoxide, and moisture can lead to a rapid decline in efficiency and significantly shorten the operational life of the vehicle’s fuel cell. By providing validated testing procedures, the new BIS standards help manufacturers and hydrogen suppliers ensure that the fuel provided for transport meets the necessary chemical requirements for safe and reliable performance.
Scaling India's Hydrogen Infrastructure
The government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was launched in January 2023, is targeting an annual production capacity of at least 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. To achieve this, the country is working to integrate about 125 GW of renewable energy capacity specifically for this purpose. The introduction of these standards is intended to provide the consistency required for hydrogen to be adopted not just in light mobility, but also in heavy-duty sectors like long-haul transport, steel manufacturing, and chemical refining.
While the new standards provide a clearer technical path for the industry, the broader adoption of hydrogen-based mobility still faces significant economic and structural hurdles. Industry experts have pointed out that scaling these solutions will require a massive expansion of testing and certification facilities across the country. Additionally, there remains a need for close monitoring of the actual efficiency and safety data as these projects move from pilot phases to commercial use. Previous experiences with the rollout of alternative fuels in India have highlighted the risks of supply chain bottlenecks and lifecycle emission challenges, making rigorous, evidence-based oversight essential for the long-term success of the sector. Investors should monitor how rapidly testing infrastructure is deployed and whether domestic hydrogen production can meet both quality and cost targets as the sector grows.
