Adani Total Gas has hiked its CNG prices by ₹4.45 per kg, citing a rise in global gas costs and a decline in domestic supply. This move highlights the challenges city gas distributors face when balancing the high cost of imported fuel with consumer affordability.
Adani Total Gas Limited has increased its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices by ₹4.45 per kg, effective immediately. This price adjustment brings the retail rate to ₹98.47 per kg in Ahmedabad, ₹102.60 per kg in Faridabad, and ₹100 per kg in Jalandhar.
The increase comes as the company faces a difficult environment in fuel procurement. City gas distributors typically use a mix of cheaper domestic gas and more expensive imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to supply their network. Recently, domestic gas allocations from state-owned producers have tightened, forcing distributors to rely more heavily on spot LNG to ensure their customers do not face supply shortages.
Global spot LNG prices have climbed to nearly $30 per Million British Thermal Units (mmBtu), a sharp jump from levels seen earlier in 2026. When a company must source a larger portion of its gas from expensive international markets, the cost of providing fuel rises significantly.
For investors, the central issue is the impact on profit margins. City gas companies operate by balancing the cost of raw gas with the price paid by consumers. If they pass on the entire cost to the end user, they risk slower sales growth, as the price gap between CNG and alternative fuels like petrol or diesel may narrow, making CNG less attractive to motorists and commercial fleets. If they do not pass on the costs, their profit margins may come under pressure.
This situation underscores the sector’s vulnerability to two main factors: government-mandated domestic gas allocations and the volatility of international energy benchmarks. Because these companies have limited control over gas supply quantities or global energy prices, they must constantly balance service reliability against financial sustainability.
Investors tracking the company may monitor future updates regarding domestic gas allocation volumes and shifts in spot LNG prices. Additionally, observing whether these frequent price hikes impact CNG adoption rates among new vehicle owners will be crucial for understanding the company's long-term demand trends.
