The company, which is currently evaluating its land holdings in Bina and Nigrie, is determining the best use for these locations to support its future power generation capacity. While thermal power remains a core focus for the company, the management is actively studying the feasibility of integrating nuclear power.

Strategic Shift And Policy Environment

This interest in nuclear energy follows the incorporation of Adani Atomic Energy Ltd, a subsidiary created to focus on nuclear ventures. The group has announced a long-term goal of developing 10 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2035. This ambition is supported by the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025, which opens the nuclear sector to private players and allows for the use of small modular reactors.

However, the company’s plans are currently in the preliminary stages. Management has indicated that final decisions on technology and investment are pending detailed government rules and regulations expected to flow from the new act. Without this regulatory clarity, the company is focusing on conducting site suitability studies to ensure that its locations are ready for development once the framework is finalized.

Balancing Thermal And Nuclear Expansion

Despite these long-term nuclear ambitions, Adani Power continues to emphasize the importance of thermal power to meet immediate energy demand. With existing operations at 18 gigawatts, the company is executing a 24-gigawatt expansion program and has announced plans to add another 3 gigawatts of thermal capacity. The company aims to reach a total baseload capacity of 45 gigawatts by fiscal year 2032.

Management noted that nuclear projects carry long gestation periods, often requiring seven to eight years from planning to commissioning. Because of this, thermal power is expected to remain the primary source of baseload electricity in the medium term. Investors may track the progress of these nuclear site evaluations alongside the execution of the company’s ongoing thermal capacity additions. The key monitorables for shareholders include the publication of government rules under the SHANTI Act and future management updates regarding capital spending and project timelines for both energy sources.
