Adani Power Limited and Adani Green Energy Limited have been awarded Letters of Award (LoA) by the Assam Government for major energy projects. Adani Power is set to invest approximately ₹48,000 crore to develop a 3,200 MW greenfield ultra super critical thermal power plant. Concurrently, Adani Green Energy will invest about ₹15,000 crore to construct two Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW, which will also cater to 500 MW of energy storage capacity. These initiatives represent a collective investment of around ₹63,000 crore in Assam.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, highlighted the North-East's growing importance and the group's commitment to its transformation, stating these projects are the largest private sector investment in the region and crucial for energy security, industrial progress, and job creation.
The Adani Power thermal plant will be built using the Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFOO) model, with coal linkage secured under the SHAKTI Policy. The project is estimated to create 20,000-25,000 jobs during construction and sustain 3,500 jobs post-commissioning, which is planned in phases from December 2030. Adani Green Energy's PSP project focuses on advanced energy storage solutions for grid stability and managing peak demand.
Impact: This substantial investment in Assam's power sector signifies a major step towards regional energy independence and economic growth. It reinforces the Adani Group's dominant position in India's energy landscape and is expected to generate significant interest among investors in infrastructure and energy stocks.
Impact Rating: 8/10
Definitions: Ultra Super Critical: A highly efficient type of thermal power plant technology that operates at higher pressures and temperatures to maximize energy conversion and minimize emissions. Pumped Storage Plant (PSP): A type of hydroelectric energy storage system that uses two water reservoirs at different elevations. Water is pumped uphill during low demand and released downhill through turbines during high demand to generate electricity. DBFOO: Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate. A project delivery method where a private entity is responsible for all aspects of a project from conception to long-term operation. SHAKTI Policy: Scheme for Harnessing and Coordinated Utilisation of Thermal energy, a government initiative for allocating coal resources for power generation.
