Adani Green Shares Slip 5% After Bernstein Downgrade

Adani Green Energy shares fell 5% to a two-month low on July 23 after Bernstein initiated an 'Underperform' rating. While the company reported a 19% profit jump, analysts raised concerns about shifting potential returns to Adani Energy Solutions and the impact of grid curtailment on earnings.

Detailed Coverage

Adani Green Energy shares faced selling pressure on July 23, dropping 5% to hit a two-month low. This movement followed a report from research firm Bernstein, which initiated coverage on the stock with an 'Underperform' rating. The firm acknowledged the company’s strong track record in project execution but flagged specific structural and operational challenges that could limit future upside for investors.

Concerns Over Strategic Asset Allocation

A primary factor in Bernstein’s cautious view is a recent transaction involving the transfer of merchant generation and battery storage capacity to Adani Energy Solutions. The research note suggests that while this move allows Adani Green to focus on building new renewable projects, it effectively shifts a significant portion of the company’s future profit potential to the group's other entity, Adani Energy Solutions. Analysts noted that investors might see less direct benefit from these high-potential assets under the current structure.

Operational Growth vs. Grid Challenges

The market reaction comes despite a strong quarterly performance from Adani Green. For the June quarter, the company reported a 19.29% increase in net profit, which rose to Rs 983 crore. Total income grew to Rs 4,663 crore, supported by a 30% rise in energy sales. The company’s operational capacity now stands at 20.1 GW, a 27% increase over the previous year, driven largely by new projects in Khavda, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

However, the report also highlighted the ongoing issue of grid curtailment, where the company is forced to reduce power generation due to transmission constraints. Bernstein estimates that this has impacted the company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) by 5% to 7%. While management expects these grid-related constraints to normalize by the second half of the fiscal year, this remains a recurring operational hurdle for large-scale renewable projects in concentrated regions.

Sector Context and Comparison

In its wider assessment of the power sector, Bernstein maintained an 'Outperform' rating on Adani Power. The firm pointed to improved merchant tariffs and higher operational efficiency as reasons for its positive stance on Adani Power. Meanwhile, the report noted that EBITDA growth in the renewable sector remains competitive, with Adani Green, Adani Power, and JSW Energy showing varying degrees of profit momentum.

For investors, the next critical monitorable will be the progress on the company’s 50 GW capacity target and the pace of new additions by FY27. Furthermore, the market will track whether the expected normalization of grid curtailment in the coming months helps stabilize profit margins, as well as how the transfer of merchant capacity impacts long-term cash flow generation.
