Adani Energy Wins ₹8,500 Crore Vizag Transmission Project

Adani Energy Solutions has won a ₹8,500 crore contract to build a power transmission system in Andhra Pradesh. The project aims to supply 4,500 MW to green hydrogen and ammonia plants in the Visakhapatnam region. This major win expands the company's total transmission order book to over ₹80,000 crore, strengthening its infrastructure footprint.

Detailed Coverage

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL) has been awarded a major inter-state transmission project in Andhra Pradesh, valued at approximately ₹8,500 crore. The project, secured through the government’s tariff-based competitive bidding process, is designed to create a reliable power backbone for industrial development in the Visakhapatnam region.

Scaling Infrastructure for Green Energy

The infrastructure, officially designated for green hydrogen and ammonia production, will be executed by a dedicated unit named Vizag Power Transmission Ltd. The primary objective is to facilitate the distribution of 4,500 MW of power to emerging industrial units. The technical scope of the order involves building a 4x1500 MVA, 765/400 kV gas-insulated substation at Pendurthi, alongside a 3x1500 MVA, 765/400 kV substation at Khammam-II.

Impact on Transmission Network Capacity

This project adds 1,582 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 10,500 MVA of transformation capacity to AESL’s existing network. Following this addition, the company’s total operational and under-construction transmission network has reached 29,531 circuit kilometres, with a combined transformation capacity of 1,33,675 MVA. This infrastructure expansion is part of the company's broader strategy to service the rising demand for energy from both industrial hubs and digital infrastructure providers.

Financial and Strategic Context

With this latest win, AESL’s total transmission order book has crossed the ₹80,000 crore mark. For investors, the scale of this project highlights the company's continued focus on winning large-scale government transmission tenders, which typically offer regulated, long-term revenue visibility. However, such large-scale capital-intensive projects require efficient execution and management of high capital spending to maintain stable margins.

While the transmission sector is generally characterized by predictable cash flows, investors should track the execution timeline of these complex substations and any potential impact on the company's debt levels as it continues to fund significant infrastructure expansion. The company’s ability to maintain its competitive edge in tariff-based bidding remains a key factor for its long-term financial health.

Going forward, the primary monitorables for stakeholders will be the project commissioning schedule and the overall pace of green hydrogen infrastructure development in the Andhra Pradesh region, which will determine the utilization of this new capacity.
