Detailed Coverage :

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced significant changes to the Aadhaar update process, effective from November, aiming for greater speed and accessibility. Individuals can now update demographic information, including name, address, date of birth, and mobile number, entirely online through the myAadhaar portal. This online system leverages cross-verification with other government databases like PAN and passport, reducing the need for physical document uploads. However, updates involving biometrics such as fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs will still necessitate a visit to an authorised Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The UIDAI has also revised its fee structure: ₹75 for demographic updates and ₹125 for biometric updates. A notable provision offers free online document updates until June 14, 2026, with specific free biometric updates for children aged 5-7 and 15-17 years. Crucially, the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with PAN must be completed by December 31, 2025; PAN cards not linked by this deadline will be deactivated from January 1, 2026. New PAN applicants must also authenticate Aadhaar during registration. Banks and financial institutions are directed to use simplified e-KYC methods like OTP and video verification.

Impact These changes are expected to streamline identity verification processes for citizens and financial institutions, potentially boosting digital adoption and efficiency in government service delivery. The mandate for Aadhaar-PAN linking is a significant step towards better financial transparency and compliance. Rating: 7/10
