Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty experienced a decline in early trade on Tuesday. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped by 55 points to 83,923.48, and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell by 40.95 points to 25,722.40. Among the Sensex companies, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, HCL Technologies Limited, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Tata Motors Limited, and Infosys Limited were among the major laggards. Conversely, Bharti Airtel Limited, Titan Company Limited, Reliance Industries Limited, and Mahindra & Mahindra Limited showed gains.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their selling spree, offloading equities worth Rs 1,883.78 crore on Monday. In contrast, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net buyers, purchasing stocks worth Rs 3,516.36 crore in the previous trading session. Over the last four days, FIIs have sold equities totaling Rs 14,269 crore. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that persistent FII selling is constraining market rallies, indicating a preference for cheaper markets with stronger earnings growth due to India's higher valuations and muted earnings growth.
In global markets, Asian indices like South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225, and Shanghai's SSE Composite traded lower, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index saw positive movement. US markets, however, closed mostly higher on Monday. The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, dipped 0.20 per cent to USD 64.76 a barrel.
Impact: This trend of sustained foreign fund outflows poses a significant risk to the Indian stock market, potentially leading to downward pressure on indices and increased volatility. While domestic buying offers some support, the cautious stance of FIIs, driven by valuation concerns, suggests that market sentiment may remain subdued until these factors change. Rating: 7
