Indian stock markets began Tuesday's trading session on a subdued note, with major indices trading in negative territory. This downturn was attributed to renewed selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and mixed signals from global markets. On November 1, FIIs offloaded equities worth ₹1,883 crore, marking their fourth consecutive session of selling. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that FIIs are cautious about India due to higher valuations and muted earnings growth, preferring cheaper markets with better growth prospects.
Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) provided crucial support by continuing their buying streak for the eighth straight session, purchasing over ₹3,500 crore worth of shares.
Among the Nifty 50 stocks, Bharti Airtel led the gains, rising 2.23%, followed by Titan Company (+1.06%), HDFC Life Insurance (+0.63%), Shriram Finance (+0.54%), and Adani Enterprises (+0.42%). On the downside, Tata Consumer Products emerged as the top loser, declining 2.92%, while Power Grid Corporation (-2.52%), Eicher Motors (-1.52%), Bajaj Auto (-1.34%), and Tata Motors (-1.04%) also saw significant drops.
Technically, Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that Nifty 50 finds support around 25,660, with a break below potentially leading to 25,500–25,400, while holding above 25,800 could push it towards 25,960–26,050. The Bank Nifty showed relative strength, closing above 58,100, supported by buying in public sector banks (PSU banks) and select private lenders.
Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities, highlighted investor caution due to the US Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates, unclear US-India trade talks, and subdued Q2 earnings. The resilience of PSU banks, seen as attractively valued amid a richly valued market, was also noted, with prospects brightened by upcoming PSU bank mergers.
Vodafone Idea surged by 9.7% following clarity on its Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues. Investors are awaiting major Q2 results from State Bank of India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Adani Ports, and IndiGo.
