Indian equity benchmarks experienced a decline on Tuesday, continuing the trend of lower lows. The Nifty 50 index concluded the trading day 165 points, or 0.64%, lower at 25,598. Similarly, the Sensex saw a significant drop of 519 points, closing at 83,459, a decrease of 0.62%.
The banking sector also reflected this downward movement, with the Nifty Bank settling 274 points, or 0.47%, lower at 57,827. The broader market sentiment was also weak, as indicated by the performance of midcap and smallcap stocks. The BSE Midcap index pulled back by 125 points (0.26%) to 47,214, and the BSE Smallcap index declined by 375 points (0.69%) to 53,882.
During the trading session, out of 3,181 stocks traded, 1,034 advanced, while 2,062 declined, highlighting a predominantly negative market breadth. A total of 75 stocks reached a fresh 52-week high, but 81 stocks touched a new 52-week low, indicating mixed investor sentiment.
Titan emerged as the top gainer in the Nifty 50, with its shares closing 2.3% higher. Other notable gainers included Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, and HDFC Life Insurance. On the losing side, Power Grid Corporation was the biggest laggard, with its shares falling 3.2%. Other prominent losers included Zomato, Adani Enterprises, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Hindalco Industries.
