The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has significantly simplified the process for Aadhaar card holders to update their personal information. Residents can now change details such as their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number entirely online. This digital transformation aims to reduce the need for physical visits to Aadhaar centers and long queues. The verification of these changes will be completed digitally using linked government documents like PAN cards, passports, driving licenses, or ration cards, making the process faster and more reliable.
A critical new directive mandates that all Permanent Account Number (PAN) card holders must link their Aadhaar card with their PAN by December 31, 2025. Failure to comply with this deadline will result in the deactivation of PAN cards starting January 1, 2026, rendering them invalid for all tax and financial transactions. This also means that new applicants for PAN cards will need to undergo Aadhaar-based verification as part of their application.
Furthermore, banks and financial institutions have streamlined their Know Your Customer (KYC) processes to be fully digital and paperless, allowing customers to complete verification using Aadhaar OTP-based authentication, Video KYC, or optional in-person verification.
A revised fee structure for Aadhaar services is also in effect from November 1: Rs 75 for updating name, address, or mobile number; Rs 125 for updating biometrics (fingerprints, iris scan, photograph). Biometric updates are free for children aged 5-7 and 15-17 years. Free online document updates are available until June 14, 2026, after which a Rs 75 fee will apply at centers. Aadhaar reprint requests cost Rs 40.
Impact: This initiative will enhance convenience for citizens and streamline financial services. The mandatory Aadhaar-PAN linking is crucial for financial integrity and tax compliance, with significant implications for those who fail to meet the deadline. Rating: 9/10.
