Asian stock markets from Tokyo to Taipei and Seoul experienced declines, retreating from record-breaking highs. This pullback was primarily driven by investors taking profits after weeks of robust gains, largely powered by technology stocks. The sentiment was further dampened by softer-than-expected economic data from the United States and mixed signals from Federal Reserve officials regarding the possibility of an interest rate cut in December.
The US dollar saw an uptick, reaching a near nine-month high against the Japanese yen and a three-month high versus the euro, as traders scaled back bets on near-term rate reductions by the Fed. Meanwhile, Australia's central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia, maintained its interest rates while indicating that some of the recent inflation surge was temporary. This statement led to a weaker Australian dollar and helped Australian stocks recover some earlier losses.
On Wall Street, US tech shares had buoyed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq overnight, but futures suggested a weaker opening. The divergence in views among Federal Reserve policymakers, with some advocating for deep rate cuts and others expressing caution due to inflation remaining above the target, has created significant uncertainty about the future path of monetary policy. Traders are now pricing in a lower probability of a December rate cut compared to a week ago.
