US Markets Waver as Consumer Confidence Hits 7-Month Low

US stock indices trimmed early gains on Tuesday after consumer confidence dropped to 89.4, a seven-month low. While the technology sector awaits Nvidia's crucial earnings report, the retail space faced selling pressure as Dick's Sporting Goods shares fell nearly 29% on weak outlook.

US markets retreated from their daily highs on Tuesday as fresh economic data weighed on investor sentiment. The Conference Board reported that its consumer confidence index fell to 89.4 in August, marking the lowest level in seven months. While shoppers still feel steady about current business conditions, the sub-index for future expectations fell to its weakest point since January, suggesting growing anxiety among households.

This decline in confidence is largely being attributed to the combined pressure of persistent inflation and higher fuel costs. Specifically, gasoline prices remaining above $4 per gallon, alongside concerns related to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and a shaky outlook for the job market, have caused consumers to become more cautious about their discretionary spending.

Retail Sector Weakness

Beyond the macroeconomic numbers, individual company performance drove significant market movement. Dick's Sporting Goods saw its stock price plunge between 22% and 29% on Tuesday. The sharp sell-off followed the company's report of a quarterly earnings miss and a downward revision of its full-year guidance. Management pointed to a challenging environment in the athletic footwear and apparel market, particularly within its Foot Locker business, as a primary reason for the downgrade. This negative sentiment rippled across the retail sector, pressuring shares of other industry players like Nike and Under Armour.

The Nvidia Earnings Catalyst

Despite the retail drag and soft economic data, the broader tech sector remained in a holding pattern. Investors are intensely focused on Nvidia, which is scheduled to report its fiscal Q2 2027 financial results after the market closes on Wednesday. Because of the company's central role in the artificial intelligence boom, the market is treating these results as a proxy for the entire sector's health. Options markets are currently pricing in significant price swings, indicating that investors expect high volatility regardless of the final numbers.

Policy and Interest Rate Outlook

Policy watchers are also looking toward the upcoming Jackson Hole Symposium. The event will feature insights from Federal Reserve leadership, and investors are hoping to find clues regarding future interest rate paths. Market strategists suggest that the event may focus more on long-term economic frameworks than on immediate policy changes. For Indian investors, the primary concern remains global risk appetite; shifts in US interest rate expectations or significant changes in the tech sector can often influence foreign institutional investment flows into the Indian market. The next key update will be the impact of Nvidia’s earnings on the broader technology sector trend.
