US Court Blocks $100k H-1B Fee; Auto Stocks Fall on Sales Data

A US federal court has paused the proposed $100,000 H-1B visa fee, offering temporary relief to Indian IT firms. Meanwhile, domestic auto stocks retreated following weak September sales data. The Indian rupee fell to 95.95 against the dollar, and the monsoon season concluded with a 12.6% rainfall deficit. Additionally, the RBI approved Anup Kumar Saha as the next MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank.

The US federal court’s decision to block the $100,000 H-1B visa fee has brought temporary relief to the Indian IT sector. Judge Haywood Gilliam ruled that the Department of State failed to follow mandatory administrative procedures, effectively stalling the controversial plan. For Indian IT companies that rely on skilled foreign labor to serve US clients, this is a positive development as it avoids a sharp increase in hiring costs that would have hurt profit margins. However, investors should note that this remains a legal matter, and the ongoing uncertainty regarding future visa policies is a factor to monitor.

While the IT sector found some relief, the automotive sector faced clear pressure on Thursday. Major auto manufacturers saw their share prices decline following the release of lackluster sales figures for September. This drop reflects broader concerns about consumer demand. Investors are watching to see if this slowdown in sales is a temporary blip or if it signals a deeper trend in domestic consumption, which could impact the revenue growth of vehicle manufacturers.

Macroeconomic pressures are also weighing on market sentiment. The Indian rupee weakened to 95.95 against the US dollar, pressured by strong US Treasury yields and elevated crude oil prices. A weaker rupee typically increases the import bill for India, which can create cost challenges for companies dependent on imported raw materials. Furthermore, the agricultural outlook is cautious as the southwest monsoon season concluded with a 12.6% rainfall deficit, marking the driest season since 2015. This rainfall shortage is a risk for rural demand, which is a critical market for the auto and consumer goods sectors.

In the banking sector, the Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Anup Kumar Saha as the next MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank. He is set to take over the role on January 1, 2027, replacing the current chief, Ashok Vaswani. For shareholders, the stability and strategic direction of the bank during this upcoming leadership transition will be a key monitorable in the coming months.
