Tiger Associates Donates Rs 260 Crore to DMK, AIADMK in FY26

Kolkata-based Tiger Associates, linked to lottery magnate Santiago Martin, provided Rs 260 crore to Tamil Nadu's DMK and AIADMK in FY26. This funding represents 74% of the combined donations reported by both parties, highlighting a significant increase from the previous year's contribution of Rs 110 crore.

Tiger Associates, a Kolkata-based entity with verified ties to the business network of lottery magnate Santiago Martin, emerged as the primary source of political funding for the DMK and AIADMK in the 2025-26 fiscal year. According to official filings submitted to the Election Commission, the firm contributed Rs 135 crore to the AIADMK and Rs 125 crore to the DMK. These donations totaled Rs 260 crore, accounting for roughly 74% of the Rs 352.55 crore in total contributions reported by the two political parties combined.

The scale of this funding represents a notable shift in the political financing landscape of Tamil Nadu. The Rs 260 crore figure marks a significant year-on-year increase from the Rs 110 crore contributed by the firm to these parties in the 2024-25 cycle. For the AIADMK, the Tiger Associates capital injection comprised approximately 84% of its total reported annual donations of Rs 161.36 crore. For the DMK, the Rs 125 crore contribution represented over 65% of its total reported donations of Rs 191.19 crore.

Electoral trusts also played a supporting role in the financing of both parties. Entities including the Prudent Electoral Trust, Triumph Electoral Trust, and Jaybharath Electoral Trust contributed a combined Rs 52 crore to the two political organizations. When combined with the Tiger Associates funds, these entities accounted for Rs 312 crore, or approximately 88.5% of the total political contributions reported by these parties during the year.

The regulatory context surrounding these donations is of interest to observers due to the business network involved. Santiago Martin and his associated companies, including Future Gaming and Hotel Services, have previously been the subject of significant regulatory and law enforcement investigations, particularly regarding the electoral bonds controversy. While Tiger Associates is distinct from Future Gaming, the presence of Subbayan Nagarajan as a designated partner in the firm establishes a clear link to the Santiago Martin business network. The timing of these funds is also notable, as the bulk of the transfers occurred in February and March, immediately preceding the state elections that saw the DMK lose power to the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam.

For those monitoring political and regulatory risk, the key takeaway is the high concentration of funding from a single private entity and its connection to a business network that has faced historical regulatory scrutiny. Observers will likely track whether such large-scale funding patterns attract further attention from regulatory bodies or lead to shifts in political transparency norms. The impact of these donations on the broader political landscape remains a subject of ongoing scrutiny as the state enters a new electoral cycle.
