A New Livelihood Category
Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Swiggy's Food Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor articulated a vision for India's delivery workforce, positioning it as a distinct "third pillar" in the nation's employment structure. This new category, "flexible employment," deviates from the traditional concepts of long-term formal jobs or independent entrepreneurship.
Kapoor clarified that this segment allows for fluidity, with individuals transitioning between formal employment and delivery work, or using it for supplemental income. "Gig sounds like a little bit of a fancy term, but the reality is it's flexible employment," he stated. The platform itself was utilized by nearly 2.5 million individuals over the past year, a number Kapoor expects to grow, highlighting the sheer scale and importance of this evolving employment model.
Navigating Regulation and Perception
The executive welcomed the government's progressive stance on social security codes, viewing them as a positive step. However, he stressed the critical need for regulators and policymakers to recognize the unique nature of flexible employment. "My only request to every stakeholder is treat it truly as different from formal employment," Kapoor urged. Applying existing parameters rigidly, he cautioned, could stifle the growth and adaptability of this sector.
Swiggy is committed to enhancing the delivery partner experience and educating the public on the diverse profiles within the flexible employment category. This includes understanding the varied motivations, from students seeking part-time income to individuals pursuing long-term delivery careers, demonstrating that the workforce is not monolithic. The company aims to improve this sector across all dimensions while fostering greater public understanding of its characteristics and the people who comprise it.
