Sensex Rises as IT Stocks Rally Despite High Oil Prices

Indian markets rebounded on Friday, driven by a 2% gain in IT stocks that helped break a three-day losing streak. Despite this, investors remain cautious as Brent crude oil prices hit $113 per barrel and mid-cap stocks face continued selling pressure.

Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Friday, successfully snapping a three-day decline. The Nifty IT index led the recovery, climbing 2.04%, which helped boost sentiment across the broader indices. This strength in domestic technology shares appears to be a shift in investor focus toward company earnings, even as global tech markets deal with uncertainty regarding heavy spending on artificial intelligence projects.

While the headline indices showed recovery, the broader market painted a more complicated picture. Selling pressure persisted in mid- and small-cap stocks, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index dropping 1.25%. This suggests that while large-cap IT stocks are finding support, investors are continuing to re-evaluate valuations in smaller segments that may have seen significant growth in recent months. The India VIX, a key indicator of market volatility, rose nearly 4% to 16.37, highlighting that the market remains nervous.

Rising energy costs remain the most significant headwind for the domestic economy. Brent crude oil prices are currently trading above $113 per barrel, a level that increases the risk of higher inflation and puts significant pressure on corporate margins across various sectors, particularly in manufacturing and logistics. When energy prices are this high, companies often struggle to pass on the added costs to consumers, which can eventually impact profit growth.

Looking ahead, liquidity is expected to be a major factor in market stability. With reports indicating that roughly Rs 3 lakh crore tied to the recent Jio Platforms IPO is expected to return to the system, some market participants believe this influx could provide support for large-cap stocks in the coming week. However, the market remains fragile. Investors are likely to prioritize stability in crude oil prices and a clear trend in corporate earnings over the next few sessions. The key monitorable will be whether this recovery in large-cap IT shares can sustain itself against the macro pressure of high energy costs and the broader correction currently happening in the small-cap segment.
