Sensex, Nifty Snap Two-Week Losing Streak With 2.5% Gains

Indian stock markets rebounded this week, with the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 both rising over 2.5%. This rally follows a brief correction, driven by strong June-quarter corporate earnings, a return of foreign investor buying, and lower crude oil prices. Investors are now focused on upcoming policy decisions and economic indicators to gauge the sustainability of this momentum.

The Indian equity market concluded the week on a strong note, successfully breaking a two-week period of decline. Both the BSE Sensex and the Nifty 50 indices recorded gains of over 2.5%, recovering from recent selling pressure that had affected investor sentiment across the broader market. The BSE Sensex finished the week at 78,094.64, while the Nifty 50 reached 24,383.60, leading to a substantial expansion of over ₹10 lakh crore in the total market capitalization of BSE-listed firms.

This recovery was supported by a combination of domestic and global factors. The June-quarter corporate earnings reports have largely met or exceeded market expectations, providing a foundation for the price recovery. Additionally, the market saw a reversal in investment trends from Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), who turned net buyers with an inflow of ₹5,949.96 crore. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also remained active participants, contributing an additional ₹5,387.66 crore to the market.

Further supporting this positive sentiment, macroeconomic data points such as the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) have shown strength. Commodity markets also provided relief as crude oil prices corrected, which helps in managing domestic inflationary risks. Furthermore, the progression of the monsoon season has been steady, which is an essential factor for the rural economy and overall consumption demand.

Broad-based participation was a notable feature of this rally, as the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices both climbed more than 2%. Within the midcap segment, stocks such as Coforge, Laurus Labs, and Container Corporation of India witnessed significant activity. Smallcap stocks including Redington and Kaynes Technology India were also among the notable performers. However, market participation remained selective, as seen by the performance of companies like Suzlon Energy and Nuvama Wealth Management, which did not participate in the broader gains and ended as laggards for the week.

From a sectoral perspective, the Information Technology (IT) space was the standout performer, with the Nifty IT index rallying 6.75%. This represents the strongest weekly performance for the IT sector since December 2023, reflecting renewed optimism regarding demand in key export markets. The Media and Auto sectors also saw healthy buying interest.

Moving forward, the market trajectory will likely be influenced by key upcoming events. Investors are tracking the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upcoming monetary policy decision, which is a major factor for liquidity and interest rate expectations. Additionally, upcoming data on manufacturing and services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) will be closely observed to assess the health of the domestic economy, alongside any major geopolitical shifts that could affect global trade and oil prices.
