Sensex, Nifty Fall 1% As Bank Earnings And Oil Prices Hit

Indian stock markets declined nearly 1% today, pressured by weak quarterly earnings from HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. Rising crude oil prices above $90 per barrel and a shift toward selling by foreign investors further weakened market sentiment.

Indian equity markets faced a broad-based sell-off on Monday, with the benchmark Sensex dropping approximately 690 points to touch an intraday low of 77,445. The Nifty 50 index also slipped below the 24,150 level, hitting a low of 24,149.90. This decline reflects growing investor caution as domestic and global pressures converged simultaneously.

Banking Earnings Impact Indices

The banking sector acted as the primary weight on the indices, with the Nifty Bank, Nifty Private Bank, and Nifty Financial Services indices each recording losses exceeding 1%. This sell-off was triggered by the recent first-quarter results of major lenders, including HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. Market participants focused on compressed net interest margins, which measure the difference between the interest income generated by banks and the amount paid out to depositors. Since these banks hold significant weight in the Nifty and Sensex, their weak performance directly accelerated the index decline.

Crude Oil and Foreign Investor Pressure

Global energy markets added another layer of risk, with crude oil prices crossing the $90 per barrel mark due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. For the Indian economy, sustained high oil prices often lead to a weaker rupee and higher import costs, which can squeeze corporate profitability across several sectors.

Furthermore, the recent reversal in foreign institutional investor (FII) sentiment has increased market volatility. After a period of buying, FIIs have turned net sellers, offloading over ₹9,000 crore worth of Indian equities in the first three weeks of July. This shift is often associated with concerns over macroeconomic stability when oil prices stay elevated for an extended period.

Technical and Market Outlook

Technical analysts are closely watching the 24,000 mark for the Nifty 50 and the 77,000 level for the Sensex, which align with the 20-day simple moving average. These levels serve as critical support zones. If the indices fail to hold above these marks, it may indicate continued selling pressure in the near term. Conversely, a sustained recovery would likely require the indices to reclaim the 24,600 level to restore positive momentum. For investors, the next few sessions will be crucial to see if buying interest returns at lower valuation levels or if the current trend of FII selling continues to dampen sentiment.
