Sensex, Nifty Close Lower as IT and Auto Stocks Dip

Indian stock markets finished lower on Wednesday as selling pressure in sectors like IT, FMCG, and auto offset early gains. Investors remained cautious due to volatile global cues and falling crude oil prices.

Indian equity markets saw a cautious session on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, with indices unable to hold onto early gains. The BSE Sensex closed at 77,614.31, recording a minor decline of 41.78 points or 0.05%. The NSE Nifty 50 mirrored this sentiment, settling at 24,276.90, down by 57.65 points or 0.24%.

The markets started the day on a positive note, but momentum faded as the session progressed. Selling pressure in key segments such as information technology (IT), fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and automobiles pulled the indices away from their intraday highs. Traders are currently navigating a mix of global uncertainties and technical factors, including the monthly derivatives (F&O) expiry, which often leads to increased volatility as investors adjust their positions.

Global cues have also played a role in the day's market sentiment. Crude oil prices saw a decline of over 2%, with Brent crude trading near $86.30 per barrel. This movement followed reports of diplomatic discussions regarding a navigation corridor in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies. Changes in oil prices can influence investor confidence, particularly in energy-importing economies like India.

While the broader indices faced pressure, there was significant activity at the company level. Adani Energy Solutions announced it had secured a major power transmission project in Maharashtra valued at ₹4,700 crore. Such company-specific developments continue to attract investor attention even when the general market sentiment remains subdued.

Looking ahead, investors are closely watching key support levels for the Nifty 50, particularly near the 24,300 mark. Whether the market finds stability or faces further profit-booking will likely depend on upcoming global macroeconomic data and how the current volatility around the monthly expiry settles in the coming sessions.
