Overview

Indian stocks opened lower as the rupee hit an all-time low against the US dollar, triggering significant foreign investor selling. Despite near-term currency headwinds, experts highlight India's strong economic fundamentals and improving corporate earnings, suggesting current market weakness presents a buying opportunity for long-term investors.

Rupee's Record Crash & FII Sell-Off SHOCK Indian Markets! But Experts Say BUY NOW?

Indian equity benchmark indices, Nifty50 and BSE Sensex, commenced Thursday's trading session in negative territory. This cautious opening follows a significant depreciation in the Indian rupee, which touched an all-time low against the US dollar on Wednesday, and substantial selling pressure from foreign portfolio investors.

Market Performance

  • At the time of reporting, the Nifty50 index was trading below 26,000, specifically at 25,956.40, down 30 points or 0.11%.
  • The BSE Sensex also opened lower, trading down by 94 points or 0.11% at 85,013.18.

Expert Insights on Market Dynamics

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, explained that the market is currently navigating two opposing forces. The sharp depreciation of the rupee by over 5% and the Reserve Bank of India's policy of non-intervention to support the currency is a negative factor, particularly from the perspective of Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).

This has prompted FIIs to resume their selling mode, contributing to the Nifty's decline of 340 points from its recent record high.

However, Dr. Vijayakumar pointed to India's improving fundamental economic factors as a significant positive. These include robust economic growth, low inflation, supportive monetary and fiscal policies, and indications of steadily improving corporate earnings. He believes that while the currency-induced weakness may weigh on the market in the near term, the fundamental strengths will dominate in the mid-term, enabling the market to resume its upward journey.

Investment Strategy Recommendation

  • Dr. Vijayakumar suggests that this near-term, currency-induced weakness can be utilized by long-term investors as an opportunity to accumulate high-quality large and midcap stocks.

FII/DII Activity

  • Foreign portfolio investors were net sellers of Indian equities on Wednesday, offloading shares worth Rs 3,207 crore.
  • In contrast, Domestic Institutional Investors provided support by being net purchasers of shares amounting to Rs 4,730 crore.

Global Market Cues

  • US stock markets concluded Wednesday's trading on a higher note, bolstered by expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate reduction.
  • Asian equities also saw gains on Thursday, mirroring the positive sentiment from the US markets, which were influenced by data indicating a cooling labour market.
  • Crude oil prices edged higher, driven by concerns over potential supply disruptions stemming from Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities.

Impact

  • This news directly influences investor sentiment and short-term market direction. The weakening rupee increases import costs and can affect companies with significant foreign currency debt or import needs. However, the underlying strength of India's economy and DII support suggest potential resilience. The expert's commentary provides a strategic framework for long-term investors navigating these short-term volatilities.
