Rupee Slips to 94.66 vs Dollar as Oil Prices Rise

The Indian rupee fell 10 paise to 94.66 against the US dollar in early trade on September 8, 2026. Rising crude oil prices near $97 per barrel and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are creating pressure on the currency. The Reserve Bank of India is actively intervening to stabilize the exchange rate while investors monitor upcoming US and Indian inflation data.

The Indian rupee opened the trading session with a decline on September 8, 2026, falling 10 paise to reach 94.66 against the US dollar. This move comes as global energy markets react to intensifying geopolitical friction in the Middle East, specifically concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy costs remain the primary driver of this currency movement. Brent crude oil prices have climbed toward $97 per barrel, creating immediate pressure on the Indian rupee. Since India imports a significant portion of its oil requirements, rising global crude prices force the country to spend more foreign exchange, which naturally creates downward pressure on the local currency. The current uncertainty regarding energy supply lines in the Middle East has added to the risk perception in the financial markets.

To manage this volatility, the Reserve Bank of India has maintained an active presence in the interbank market. The central bank’s ongoing dollar-selling operations have acted as a buffer, preventing a sharper decline and keeping the currency trading within a relatively controlled range of 94.00 to 94.75. This intervention indicates a focus on minimizing extreme swings rather than strictly defending a specific valuation level.

The cautious sentiment in the currency market has also spilled over into the domestic equity space. Both the Sensex and the Nifty opened with losses, reflecting a broader risk-off mood among market participants. While foreign institutional investors were net buyers of Rs 280.13 crore in the previous session, the current volatility is leading many investors to wait for further clarity.

Moving forward, investors are keeping a close watch on two major upcoming triggers. First, the release of consumer price index data from both India and the United States will be key to understanding inflation trends. Second, the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for September 16 is expected to provide signals on the future direction of global interest rates. These events will likely determine the next phase of movement for both the currency and domestic financial markets.
