Rupee Recovers 3 Paise to 95.25 as Oil Prices Ease

The Indian rupee gained 3 paise to reach 95.25 against the US dollar on Thursday, supported by a rally in the domestic stock market and a slight drop in crude oil prices. While the local currency found some relief, it continues to face pressure from a strong US dollar and global interest rate concerns.

The Indian rupee saw a marginal recovery on Thursday, trading at 95.25 against the US dollar, marking a gain of 3 paise. This movement comes after a period of weakness, with the currency recovering from an intraday low of 95.38. The modest appreciation was primarily supported by a sharp rise in domestic stock markets, as both the Sensex and Nifty posted significant gains.

When foreign investors buy Indian stocks, they bring capital into the country, which increases the supply of foreign currency and helps stabilize or strengthen the rupee. The optimism in the markets provided a necessary counter-balance to global headwinds. Additionally, a dip in global crude oil prices helped the currency. India imports a large portion of its crude oil requirements, and when oil prices fall, it reduces the country’s total import bill, easing pressure on the trade deficit. Brent crude futures were trading lower at $114.13 per barrel during the session.

Despite these supportive factors, the rupee continues to face stiff competition from a resilient US dollar. The US dollar index, which tracks the greenback against six other major currencies, remained elevated at 102.26. This strength is largely driven by the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy. With rates currently set between 3.75 percent and 4.00 percent, the US central bank has kept global investors on edge regarding potential future interest rate hikes. High interest rates in the US often attract capital away from emerging markets like India, putting downward pressure on currencies like the rupee.

Looking ahead, market experts at Mirae Asset Sharekhan expect the currency to trade within a range of 94.50 to 95.50 in the near term. The next major triggers for the rupee will be upcoming US economic data, including GDP growth figures and the PCE price index, which is a key measure of inflation. Investors should track these releases as they will likely influence the US Federal Reserve's stance on future rate hikes, which will subsequently impact global currency trends.
