The Indian rupee is expected to strengthen against the US dollar today, driven by heavy institutional demand for the Jio Platforms IPO. While foreign capital inflows boost the currency, rising global crude oil prices act as a counterbalancing force. Investors are tracking how these competing factors and potential Reserve Bank of India interventions influence the exchange rate.
Indian currency markets are expected to see upward movement when trading resumes today, following a public holiday. The primary driver is the significant interest from foreign investors in the Jio Platforms initial public offering. This demand is expected to push the exchange rate toward the 94.75–94.80 level against the US dollar, marking a shift from the previous closing level of 94.9250.
When foreign institutional investors participate in a large IPO, they typically bring in US dollars and convert them into Indian rupees to pay for the shares. This activity increases the demand for the rupee in the spot market, leading to appreciation. With the anchor portion of the Jio Platforms offering being oversubscribed by 30 times, the volume of these capital inflows is substantial, providing a strong supporting factor for the currency.
However, the rupee's gain faces a significant challenge from global energy prices. Brent crude oil has risen to $110.34 per barrel, driven by supply concerns in the Middle East and risks to shipping lanes. Since India imports a large portion of its oil, higher prices mean the country needs to spend more dollars to pay for these imports, which can put downward pressure on the rupee. This creates a tug-of-war between the positive equity-market inflows and the negative pressure from higher energy costs.
The Reserve Bank of India remains a key player in this environment. The central bank has been actively managing volatility, often stepping in to support the currency when it hits certain levels, such as the 95-per-dollar mark. While the rupee has enjoyed a winning streak over the last seven sessions, it continues to face technical resistance at the 94.70 level. Investors will be watching to see if the momentum from the IPO is strong enough to break through this barrier or if the central bank chooses to manage the pace of the currency's rise.
