Rupee Gains 6 Paise to 84.89 Against Dollar as Oil Dips

The Indian rupee opened at 84.89 against the US dollar today, recovering slightly from its previous close of 84.95. This minor gain is supported by a drop in global oil prices following reports of progress in US-Iran negotiations. Investors are now tracking the Reserve Bank of India’s market stance and the impact of the upcoming US midterm elections on global currency markets.

The Indian rupee saw a marginal recovery at the start of the trading session on November 2, 2026, opening at 84.89 against the US dollar. This reflects a gain of 6 paise from the previous close of 84.95. The improvement comes largely as a result of a dip in global crude oil prices, which slid by USD 2 to USD 111.35 per barrel.

For India, oil is a major import, and the country relies heavily on international markets to meet its energy needs. When oil prices fall, the country generally spends fewer dollars to buy energy, which eases the demand for foreign currency and supports the rupee. Recent reports of progress in US-Iran negotiations contributed to this price reduction, providing some temporary relief to the domestic currency.

While the rupee gained, other Asian currencies are struggling against a strong US dollar. The South Korean Won and the Malaysian Ringgit both saw losses in early trade. This contrast highlights that the rupee’s movement is currently being driven more by specific factors like oil prices rather than a broad regional trend of currency strength. The Chinese Renminbi, however, stood out as an exception, recording a marginal gain during the session.

Looking ahead, market participants are keeping a close watch on the Reserve Bank of India. The central bank typically intervenes to manage liquidity and prevent sharp fluctuations in the exchange rate, aiming to keep the currency stable. Additionally, global attention is fixed on the upcoming US midterm elections. The outcome of these polls may influence US fiscal policies and government spending, adding an element of uncertainty to currency markets in the near term. Investors and businesses are monitoring these global developments, which are expected to keep currency volatility in a tight range for the time being.
