Reliance Industries Q2 Profit Rises 34% To ₹29,550 Crore

Reliance Industries posted record quarterly revenue of Rs 3.62 lakh crore, with a 34% jump in net profit. While its oil-to-chemicals and digital arms showed strong growth, investors are monitoring margin compression in the retail sector due to rising costs and strategic investments.

Reliance Industries Ltd has reported its strongest-ever quarterly financial results for the September period, driven by record-breaking growth across its core business segments. The company’s consolidated revenue reached Rs 3.62 lakh crore, while net profit climbed by 34 percent to Rs 29,550 crore. This performance marks a significant milestone, with first-half net profit crossing the Rs 50,000 crore mark for the first time in the company's history.

Strong Growth in Energy and Digital Segments

The oil-to-chemicals division acted as a significant driver for the company, reporting a 44.2 percent surge in revenue to Rs 2.32 lakh crore. The company benefited from robust refining margins that were three times higher than the previous year. To manage potential supply chain volatility, the firm diversified its crude sourcing by tapping into markets in North America and Europe, which helped ensure stable fuel supplies despite geopolitical tensions in regions like the Strait of Hormuz.

Similarly, the digital services arm continued to scale. Jio Platforms reported revenue of Rs 47,485 crore, reflecting an 11.3 percent year-on-year growth. This was fueled by a steady rise in the average revenue per user (ARPU), which reached Rs 218.8, and a subscriber base that has now crossed 542 million. The company’s 5G rollout remains a focal point, as it now accounts for over 56 percent of the firm's wireless data traffic.

Retail Margin Pressures and Capital Spending

While the overall numbers were strong, the retail business highlighted the impact of input-cost inflation and strategic spending. Reliance Retail Ventures reported revenue of Rs 91,716 crore, a 6.4 percent increase. However, retail margins faced a 120-basis-point decline. Management attributed this largely to higher operating costs and investments in the business, though digital channels like JioMart showed resilience with 42 percent revenue growth.

Investors are also tracking the company’s capital expenditure, which stood at Rs 38,153 crore for the quarter. This investment is being funneled into large-scale refining projects and infrastructure for consumer-facing businesses. While this spending is aimed at long-term capacity building, it remains a key factor for shareholders to monitor in terms of cash flow and debt management.

Looking ahead, the market will likely track the company’s ability to recover retail margins as input costs stabilize. Furthermore, the sustainability of refining margins, which are historically volatile and sensitive to global crude oil price movements, will be an important metric for the coming quarters. The speed at which the company converts its high capital spending into operational returns will remain the central focus for long-term investors.
