RBI Holds Repo Rate at 5.25%; SpaceX Shares Drop 7%

The Reserve Bank of India maintained the repo rate at 5.25%, prioritizing stability amidst global uncertainty. Meanwhile, US markets hit record highs, but SpaceX shares tumbled 7% following concerns over high AI infrastructure spending. Additionally, the LIC retail OFS opened today after a strong response from institutional investors.

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee has decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25% in its latest review. The decision comes as the central bank aims to maintain a neutral stance while balancing domestic growth and global economic volatility. This pause provides stability for borrowers and financial markets, with the central bank prioritizing inflation management and economic resilience.

While the RBI maintained the status quo, international markets showed significant movement. US stock indices, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, closed at record highs on August 4, 2026. This optimism was largely driven by positive sentiment surrounding geopolitical developments in the Middle East and strong earnings reports from major AI-focused technology companies.

In contrast to the broader market rally, shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) fell approximately 7% in extended trading. The company, which went public in June 2026, released its Q2 2026 financial report showing revenue of $7.81 billion, which exceeded market expectations. However, investor sentiment took a hit due to the company's aggressive spending plans. Analysts noted that heavy capital expenditure on AI infrastructure has raised questions about near-term profitability.

Investors are also tracking potential liquidity pressures for SpaceX. A significant share lock-up expiration is scheduled for August 6, 2026, which will release nearly 911.5 million shares into the market. Such events often increase price volatility as insiders gain the ability to trade their holdings, and market participants will be watching closely to see how the stock absorbs this new supply.

On the domestic front, the Offer for Sale (OFS) for the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) opened for retail investors on August 5. The non-retail segment saw robust participation on the previous day, oversubscribing 3.32 times its base issue size, signaling strong institutional appetite for the insurance giant.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall across several parts of India. Extremely heavy showers are expected in Assam and Meghalaya, with very heavy rainfall predicted for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and the Northeast region. These monsoon conditions are being monitored by market participants for their potential impact on agricultural output in the affected states.
