Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023-24 data reveals Punjab and Rajasthan have the highest rates of informality for regular wage earners in India. Over 75% in both states lack written contracts, significantly above the national average of 58%. This absence impacts job security and social security access, with women workers facing a greater burden. While Northern states show high informality, the Northeast is most formalised. New labour codes aim to boost formalisation, promising significant gains for Punjab and Rajasthan.
