Visit Cancellation Amid Domestic Demands
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's planned visit to Russia has been cancelled, according to reports. The trip aimed to demonstrate BRICS financial cooperation and attend high-level meetings, including those of the New Development Bank. Sources cited parliamentary work, specifically preparations for the Women's Reservation Bill, and urgent domestic obligations as the reasons for the cancellation.
Moscow Reaffirms Energy Commitment
Concurrently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov provided strong assurances to India regarding continued energy supplies. He characterized the bilateral relationship as unbreakable and based on deep friendship. Lavrov stated that Moscow would fully safeguard India's interests in Russian energy supplies, dismissing "unfair external competition" as a threat to their trade.
Navigating Geopolitical Crosscurrents
The assurances come at a critical juncture for India, which has seen its crude oil purchases from Russia drop by over 15%. Uncertainty also surrounds the extension of a crucial US waiver that permits Indian refiners to purchase certain Russian oil grades. The potential expiration of this waiver after May 16 could compel Indian processors to seek more expensive spot barrels from alternative sources.
Sustained Bilateral Cooperation
Lavrov highlighted ongoing cooperation, citing the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant as a prime example of successful collaboration. Russia remains a significant supplier of coal, oil, and gas to India, with discussions for further nuclear power plant cooperation ongoing. He emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on bolstering India's sovereignty and the extraordinary depth and stability of India-Russia relations.
