Nifty Tests Critical 22,500 Support As Bearish Trend Persists

The Nifty 50 is facing significant selling pressure as it approaches the key 22,500 support level. Following a weak September performance, investors are closely watching global oil prices and US Treasury yields for signs of stability.

The Nifty 50 index is facing a challenging start to October, struggling to hold its ground after a difficult September. On September 30, 2026, the index closed at 22,620, reflecting ongoing caution among traders. The market is now closely testing a critical support zone between 22,500 and 22,600. In simple terms, a support zone acts like a floor for stock prices; when a market falls to this level, investors often watch to see if there is enough buying interest to stop the decline.

Technically, the index has been in a corrective phase for some time, having dropped significantly from its recent high of 24,774. The recent weakness is underscored by a consistent trend of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) selling their holdings, which reduces overall demand. If the index fails to hold the 22,500 level, analysts indicate that selling pressure could continue, potentially pushing the market toward the 22,300 to 22,400 range.

Several external factors are weighing on investor sentiment. High Brent crude oil prices, currently hovering around $100 per barrel, are a concern for India's economy, as they can lead to higher inflation and import costs. Additionally, rising US Treasury yields often make global investors move money away from emerging markets like India in search of safer returns. These global pressures, combined with a cautious outlook ahead of the upcoming Reserve Bank of India policy meeting, are keeping the mood in the market largely negative.

While the index has seen some stabilization near its 200-week moving average, which is a long-term trend indicator, the immediate trend remains weak. Any short-term rally will likely face obstacles between 22,800 and 23,000, where previous selling has been strong. For investors, the most important development to track is whether the 22,500 floor holds during the next few sessions. If the index stays above this level, it may provide some breathing room, but a decisive break below it could signal a deeper decline. The market is also looking for clarity from the central bank on interest rates, which will likely dictate the direction of the markets in the coming weeks.
