Nifty Reclaims 24,700 As Markets Extend Four-Day Rally

Indian markets rose for the fourth straight day on August 3, with the Nifty 50 closing at 24,774. The rally was driven by IT sector gains, lower crude oil prices, and steady foreign investment, though specific stocks like Zee Entertainment faced selling pressure following regulatory updates.

Indian equity markets maintained positive momentum on August 3, marking the fourth consecutive day of gains. The Nifty 50 index surged 390.7 points, or 1.6%, to close at 24,774.3, successfully reclaiming the 24,700 level for the first time since early March 2026. The Sensex followed this trend, adding 544.39 points to finish at 78,639.03.

This broad-based rally extended beyond benchmark indices, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices both advancing 1.2%. Investor sentiment was primarily supported by a cooling in global crude oil prices, which often eases cost pressure for India's import-heavy economy, alongside consistent buying by foreign institutional investors.

Sectoral Performance and Diverging Trends

The IT sector emerged as the clear leader, with the Nifty IT index rising over 3% as investors showed renewed interest in technology stocks. While nearly all sectoral indices ended the day in the green, the Nifty Media index bucked the trend, finishing as the sole major sectoral loser.

Individual stock performance showed that market sentiment did not move uniformly across all results. For instance, ITC shares rose 2% despite reporting a 27% year-on-year decline in first-quarter profit, suggesting investors may have already priced in the disappointment or are focusing on other recovery metrics. Similarly, Indian Oil Corporation saw a 2% gain despite posting a quarterly loss. In contrast, some companies saw sharp corrections despite healthy earnings; Muthoot Finance, for example, fell 7% despite reporting strong financial results, indicating potential profit-booking by investors.

Regulatory and Market Alerts

Specific stocks witnessed significant volatility due to company-specific news. Zee Entertainment shares tumbled 15% following regulatory action taken by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This highlights a recurring market reality where company-specific regulatory or governance news can heavily outweigh positive broader market trends. Furthermore, over 180 stocks across the exchanges touched their 52-week highs, including names like Bajaj Finance and Divi's Laboratories, reflecting strong momentum in select pockets of the market.

As the market enters the next trading session, investors will likely track whether the Nifty can sustain its position above the 24,700 threshold. Key monitorables include ongoing foreign investor inflow trends, any further fluctuations in global crude oil prices, and how the market reacts to the remaining corporate earnings updates for the quarter.
