Nifty Holds 24,000 as IT Stocks Offset Banking Sell-Off

The Nifty 50 index maintained the 24,000 level on September 1, 2026, supported by strength in IT shares. While a strong Q1 GDP growth of 7.8% provided fundamental support, market sentiment remained pressured by rising Brent crude prices above $91 a barrel and continued selling by foreign investors.

The Nifty 50 index navigated a volatile session on Tuesday, managing to sustain the 24,000 benchmark despite significant headwinds. The market movement reflected a clear sectoral divergence, as buying interest in technology stocks provided a necessary floor against heavy selling in the banking and financial services sector.

The divergence between key sectors has become a primary feature of the current market trend. While financial heavyweights and banking stocks faced persistent selling pressure throughout the day, the information technology sector emerged as a significant support pillar. Stocks like HCL Technologies saw investor interest, which helped offset losses in other index heavyweights and prevented the Nifty from slipping below its immediate support range of 24,000–24,100.

Investors are currently weighing strong domestic economic indicators against global macro risks. Data released recently showed that India's real GDP grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, exceeding market expectations of 7.3%. Despite this positive fundamental backdrop, broader market sentiment has been dampened by external pressures. Brent crude oil prices have surged past $91 per barrel, driven by renewed geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. This increase in energy costs poses a direct risk to inflation expectations and, by extension, the interest rate trajectory.

A significant concern for market participants remains the aggressive selling activity by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Market data indicated a substantial outflow of ₹7,985.88 crore in the preceding trading session, which has added to the cautious mood. This consistent selling pressure from overseas investors is acting as a major constraint on market momentum, even when domestic economic data remains robust.

For investors, the immediate monitorables involve the stability of the 24,000 support level on the Nifty. A failure to hold this level, combined with continued FII outflows, could increase the risk of a deeper technical correction. Additionally, trends in global energy prices and any escalation in geopolitical developments will remain critical factors. Market participants will likely track whether domestic institutional buying can continue to cushion the impact of foreign selling in the coming sessions.
