Nifty Hits 22,936 As Markets Rally On Q2 Earnings Optimism

Indian stock markets climbed over 1% on Thursday, supported by positive quarterly earnings and a cooling in crude oil prices. The Sensex ended at 74,151 as foreign investment helped lift sentiment. While Realty and FMCG sectors saw strong gains, shares of Trent slipped 1.79% following a leadership transition announcement involving Chairman Noel Tata.

Indian equity markets staged a firm recovery on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as investor sentiment improved on the back of strong second-quarter earnings reports. The benchmark Nifty 50 index rose to 22,936, while the Sensex reclaimed the 74,151 level. The rally was supported by renewed buying interest from foreign institutional investors and a cooling trend in global crude oil prices, which helped ease concerns regarding inflation and the trade deficit.

Market Drivers and Sectoral Trends

The broader market recovery was driven by a wave of optimism surrounding domestic economic growth. Analysts noted that declining crude oil prices provided a relief to the market, as did potential signs of diplomatic de-escalation in the Middle East. Sectoral indices showed widespread strength. The Nifty Realty index outperformed, advancing 2.75% as developer stocks like DLF posted gains of 4.21%. Similarly, the Nifty FMCG index rose 2.34%, with investors anticipating that higher dearness allowance payouts for government employees could boost household consumption in the coming months. Banking stocks also saw positive movement, with institutional capital flowing into both private and public sector lenders.

Key Stock Movements

While the overall market trended higher, individual corporate developments heavily influenced specific stock performances. Adani Group companies, including Adani Ports and Adani Enterprises, featured among the top performers in the Nifty 50 index. In contrast, the automotive sector lagged, with Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Auto closing lower as the broader market momentum failed to translate into gains for these players.

Investors also closely tracked the leadership transition at Trent. The company’s shares fell by 1.79% following the announcement that Noel Tata will step down as Chairman. According to the company, the leadership role is set to transition to Bahram Vakil, while Noel Tata will shift into the role of Chairman Emeritus. Such transitions can sometimes lead to short-term uncertainty among shareholders regarding future strategy and governance.

Looking ahead, market participants are shifting focus to the second half of the financial year. With GDP estimates for the second quarter revised upward, there is cautious optimism about sustained domestic growth. However, investors are expected to remain attentive to external variables, including liquidity patterns and potential global headwinds, as the economy moves toward the upcoming fiscal budgeting cycle.
