Indian stock markets snapped a four-day winning streak on Tuesday, with the Nifty 50 closing down 0.64% at 24,614.90. Investors are adopting a cautious approach as they await the Reserve Bank of India’s upcoming monetary policy announcement. While realty and IT stocks faced selling pressure, the market saw resilience in the media and metal sectors.
Indian equity markets saw a decline on Tuesday, ending a four-day rally as investors pulled back ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee decision. The Nifty 50 index dropped 159.40 points, or 0.64%, to finish at 24,614.90, while the BSE Sensex fell 210.08 points, or 0.27%, to close at 78,428.95. Market volatility, measured by the India VIX, rose by nearly 2% during the session, signaling increased investor caution.
Sectoral Performance and Market Divergence
The decline was broad-based, with the realty sector emerging as the top loser, dropping 2.39%. Information technology stocks also faced selling pressure, with the Nifty IT index falling 0.82% after a period of recent gains. Other major sectors including financial services, FMCG, and auto also ended the day in the red. Despite the overall weakness, some pockets of the market remained positive. The Nifty Media index climbed 2.03%, and the metal index ended 0.91% higher. While the broader Nifty index underperformed the Sensex, market experts note this is partly an adjustment to the newly implemented Closing Auction Session mechanism for stocks in the futures and options segment.
Impact of Global Factors
Energy prices played a role in market sentiment, with global crude oil prices moving upward. Brent crude rose by 2.46% to $85.83 per barrel, while WTI crude increased by 1.83% to $81.81 per barrel. Rising energy costs often influence investor sentiment regarding inflation and operating costs for manufacturing and logistics-heavy industries. Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee remained steady against the US dollar at 95.3775, supported by a balance between foreign portfolio inflows and demand from importers.
Investor Monitorables Ahead of RBI Policy
The central bank is widely expected to hold interest rates steady in its upcoming policy review. Investors are focused on the RBI's commentary regarding inflation management, banking system liquidity, and the growth outlook for the domestic economy. Clear signals on whether the central bank intends to maintain current rates or shift its stance will be crucial for the next phase of market direction. Tracking these policy cues, alongside any updates on global crude oil trends, will remain essential for market participants in the coming sessions.
