The Nifty 50 index is looking to move past the 24,400 resistance level after a 1.1% gain on July 29, supported by falling global oil prices. While market sentiment has improved, the index needs to maintain this momentum to reach previous highs. Meanwhile, the Bank Nifty continues to trade in a narrow range, struggling to break above its own resistance zones.
The Indian equity market is currently in a consolidation phase following a recent rally. On July 29, the Nifty 50 index rose by 1.1 percent to close at 24,250. This upward move was largely supported by lower global crude oil prices, which typically reduce the import bill for India and improve market sentiment. However, the index now faces a significant hurdle at the 24,400 mark. This level is important because it aligns with the 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), a technical indicator often used to track the long-term trend of an index.
For the Nifty 50 to attempt reaching its previous swing highs of 24,500 to 24,600, it must sustain a move above this 24,400 resistance level. Market data indicates that the index recently found support near 23,600, which helped fuel a recovery of approximately 650 points over the last four trading sessions. Currently, the Nifty is trading above its 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day EMAs, which suggests an improvement in short-to-medium-term momentum. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), a tool used to measure the speed and change of price movements, is at 56, showing a neutral-to-positive trend.
Bank Nifty Struggles for Direction
While the Nifty 50 has shown strength, the Bank Nifty has been underperforming, as highlighted by technical ratio charts. The banking index closed at 57,206 on July 29, a gain of 0.79 percent, but it remains caught in a range-bound structure. It faces immediate resistance in the 57,300 to 57,400 zone. Achieving a sustained close above this area is necessary to clear the path toward 57,800 and 58,200.
Technical analysis shows that the Bank Nifty is trading near its 20-day and 50-day EMAs, with these moving averages currently flattened. This indicates that the index lacks a clear directional trend at the moment. Significant support for the banking index is placed between 56,500 and 56,700, with a stronger support level seen at 56,000. If the index falls below the 56,700 support, it could lead to increased selling pressure. Investors should track whether the index can decisively break past the 57,500 mark, which could potentially change the current consolidation trend.
