The Nifty 50 has failed to exceed its previous day's high for 12 straight trading sessions, a record longer than the 2014 streak of 9 days. This caution, linked to the new Closing Auction Session and global economic pressures, places the index near key support levels as investors wait for a clear direction.
The Nifty 50 has entered uncharted territory, failing to rise above its previous day's high for 12 consecutive trading sessions. This streak is the longest period of such restricted movement since at least 2014, when the index saw a 9-day run of similar consolidation. This trend of failing to set new highs reflects a period of cautious sentiment among traders, preventing the index from moving significantly in either direction.
One major factor influencing current market behavior is the introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Since August 3, 2026, the market has used this new 20-minute window, from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM, to determine the closing price of securities in the futures and options segment. This change in how the closing price is set through an auction mechanism has introduced new variables for institutional and retail traders, contributing to the current hesitation in the market.
Beyond domestic regulatory changes, global economic pressures are also weighing on investor sentiment. Rising US bond yields and higher crude oil prices, which have moved toward $92 per barrel, are creating a cautious environment. These global factors often influence the flow of foreign investment into Indian equities, adding pressure on the overall market mood.
From a technical perspective, the index is facing persistent resistance, characterized by a series of lower-high formations on daily charts. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), a tool used to measure the speed and change of price movements, has dipped to 41.34. This indicates that momentum is currently weak, as the value is below its signal line.
The immediate focus for the market is the 24,000 level. Financial analysts view this as a critical support area, meaning it is a price level where buying interest has historically emerged. A sustained move below 24,000 could signal further selling pressure, potentially pushing the index toward the 23,800 to 23,900 zone. On the upside, the index faces resistance in the 24,138 to 24,268 range, which must be cleared before any significant upward trend can resume.
While historical data suggests that such prolonged periods of sideways trading have sometimes preceded a market rebound, the current price structure remains fragile. For now, the next important development for investors to track will be whether the index can hold the 24,000 support level or if it will face further declines as the market adapts to the new closing auction process.
