The Namo Drone Didi initiative is training rural women from Self-Help Groups to operate agricultural drones. Backed by an 80% government subsidy, the program aims to boost farm efficiency and create new local income streams. However, long-term success will depend on overcoming technical, maintenance, and operational hurdles as the scheme scales nationwide.

The Namo Drone Didi scheme is currently scaling across India, aiming to modernize traditional agricultural practices by training women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as certified drone pilots. This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Rural Development in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, is designed to integrate high-end technology into rural economies. The government has allocated Rs 1,261 crore for the program, which covers an 80% subsidy—capped at Rs 8 lakh per SHG—for the purchase of agricultural drones, their accessories, insurance, and maintenance.

At the core of the program is the transition of SHGs into local service providers. Each selected group nominates one member for a mandatory 15-day training course to obtain DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) certification, while a second member undergoes training as a technical assistant. By shifting from manual methods to drone-based spraying of pesticides and fertilizers, these SHGs aim to offer services to local farmers, with a target of generating at least Rs 1 lakh in annual income per group. The initiative intends to cover 15,000 women-led SHGs by the end of the 2025-26 fiscal year.

While the program provides a financial boost through subsidies and creates new employment pathways, experts and observers have noted several operational challenges. The viability of the model depends heavily on the consistent use of the equipment, which faces technical hurdles such as limited battery life and the requirement for reliable transportation of drones between fields. Furthermore, maintaining the high-tech equipment in rural environments poses a potential bottleneck, as downtime for repairs could disrupt service schedules.

Beyond technical uptime, there are environmental and long-term economic considerations. The widespread use of drones for aerial chemical spraying requires careful monitoring to prevent negative impacts on pollinators and fragile local ecosystems. Additionally, the transition of SHGs from subsidized pilots to independent, profitable commercial enterprises remains a key monitorable. The long-term success of the Namo Drone Didi program will depend on whether these collectives can establish a steady demand for their services among local farmers, manage operating costs once subsidies are fully utilized, and ensure the equipment remains serviceable over the long term.
