Kotak Securities Sees Rupee Above 98 Despite Rising Oil Prices

Kotak Securities predicts the Indian Rupee will remain stronger than 98 per US Dollar, even if crude oil prices hit $105 per barrel. While high oil costs may pressure inflation and GDP growth, analysts believe the Nifty has strong technical support near 23,800. The firm suggests the market could see a period of consolidation as investors shift toward value-driven sectors like IT and banking.

The Indian economy and stock market are navigating risks linked to rising global crude oil prices, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Despite these concerns, research from Kotak Securities suggests that the Indian Rupee will maintain relative stability. Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, expects the currency to avoid breaching the 100-level mark against the US Dollar, even under difficult scenarios.

Impact of Crude Oil on Inflation and Growth

Crude oil prices act as a significant cost factor for India, as the country imports a large portion of its energy needs. According to the research, if crude oil prices stay above $85 per barrel, the country may face pressure on its current account deficit and inflation. Projections suggest that retail inflation could rise to a range of 4.8% to 5.2%, up from the current 4.1%. Furthermore, if crude oil prices were to escalate to $105 per barrel, there is a risk that real GDP growth could slow to between 5.5% and 5.8%.

Currency Projections and Market Support

Despite these macroeconomic pressures, the outlook for the Rupee remains controlled. The firm forecasts that the currency could move to 97 against the US Dollar if oil prices stay at $85 per barrel, and up to 98 if prices reach $105. Conversely, if geopolitical tensions de-escalate, there is potential for the Rupee to appreciate back toward the 94 to 94.5 range. In the equity market, analysts have identified 23,800 as a key technical support level for the Nifty and Sensex. The expectation is for a trading band between 23,000 and 25,000.

Shift Toward Value-Driven Sectors

Market dynamics are showing signs of a potential rotation in capital. There has been a recent return of foreign institutional investors as net buyers, which may indicate a move of capital away from global stocks that have seen high valuations in the AI space and toward value-driven sectors in India. Within the domestic market, the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) and IT sectors are highlighted as areas that could provide support during this period of consolidation. Investors will continue to track how crude oil volatility impacts corporate margins and whether the Reserve Bank of India adjusts its monetary policy to manage the potential rise in headline inflation.
