Karnataka Seeks ₹7,142 Crore Drought Relief, Pegs Losses at ₹46,324 Crore

The Karnataka government has requested ₹7,142.64 crore in central aid following a sharp rise in drought-related agricultural losses. With 177 taluks declared drought-hit, the state is seeking urgent funds to mitigate the impact on farmers and infrastructure. The situation highlights potential pressure on rural consumption and agricultural output in the coming quarters.

The Karnataka government has formally appealed to the Union government for ₹7,142.64 crore in emergency assistance to address the deepening drought crisis. This request comes after a thorough assessment by state authorities revealed that losses to crops and infrastructure have now reached an estimated ₹46,324.50 crore. The state had earlier sought a smaller amount of ₹3,705.30 crore, but the figure was revised upward as data from more affected regions became available.

Scale of Agricultural Distress

State officials have officially classified 177 taluks as drought-hit, out of a total of 217 taluks identified as experiencing drought-like conditions. The damage is widespread, affecting both agriculture and infrastructure. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has noted that water levels in several reservoirs, particularly those outside the Krishna basin, have fallen to critical levels. This water scarcity, coupled with moisture deficits in usually rainfall-rich regions like the Coastal and Malnad areas, has severely impacted farming activities.

To address the immediate needs of the farming community, the state administration has started distributing direct relief payments of ₹2,500 per farmer. However, state officials maintain that this is a temporary measure and that significant intervention from the Union government is necessary to prevent broader economic stagnation in rural areas.

Potential Impact on Rural Economy

A Central Inter-Ministerial team, led by Joint Secretary Ajit Kumar Sahu, is currently on a three-day visit to the state. The team is conducting field surveys to verify the state’s loss estimates before reporting back to the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

For investors and observers of the broader economy, the situation in Karnataka carries implications for rural demand. Significant crop damage can reduce disposable income for farmers, which often leads to a slowdown in demand for consumer goods, fertilizers, and equipment in the affected regions. While the state government works to secure funds, the pace of aid disbursement and the ability of the agricultural sector to recover will be important factors in the economic outlook for the state.

The next major development to track will be the findings of the Central Inter-Ministerial team. Their report will be the deciding factor in the final quantum of assistance provided by the Union government under the National Disaster Response Fund, which will determine the state's capacity to manage the recovery process.
