India's Manufacturing Boom Accelerates
Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, globally recognized as Foxconn, has achieved a remarkable feat by hiring 30,000 workers for its new iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, India. This rapid recruitment, accomplished in just eight to nine months, signals Apple's accelerated efforts to diversify its global supply chain and reduce its dependency on China. The state-of-the-art facility is now actively engaged in assembling Apple's latest flagship models, the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
A Workforce Primarily Composed of Women
A distinguishing characteristic of this new Foxconn facility is its workforce demographic, where women constitute approximately 80 percent of the employees. A significant portion of these women are young, aged between 19 and 24 years, and are entering the formal industrial sector for the first time in their careers. Their migration from surrounding states to Karnataka underscores the substantial employment avenues being generated by large-scale manufacturing operations within India.
State-of-the-Art Production and Expansion Plans
The factory, spread across an expansive 300 acres, commenced its trial production phase around April-May. Initially focusing on the iPhone 16 series, it has now transitioned to producing the most advanced iPhone 17 Pro Max models. More than 80 percent of the output from this plant is designated for export, reinforcing India's crucial role as a key global manufacturing hub for Apple products. The production floor area alone spans nearly 2.5 lakh square feet, positioning it to surpass Foxconn's existing facility in Tamil Nadu.
Significant Investment and Community Development
Foxconn is making a substantial investment of close to ₹20,000 crore in this Devanahalli project. Projections indicate that the facility has the potential to employ up to 50,000 workers at its peak operational capacity next year. To accommodate and support this vast workforce, Foxconn has developed extensive dormitory facilities, with plans for the campus to evolve into a comprehensive mini-township offering residential, medical, educational, and recreational amenities.
Attractive Employment Conditions
Workers at the Devanahalli facility are estimated to earn an average monthly salary of around ₹18,000, which is considered competitive, particularly for women in blue-collar positions. The company further enhances its employee benefits by providing free accommodation and subsidized meals.
Government Support and Strategic Significance
A government official commented that this project is a clear demonstration of the success of India's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Launched in 2021, the scheme aims to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities and has been instrumental in attracting major global electronics manufacturers like Foxconn to establish significant operations in the country.
Impact
The establishment and rapid expansion of this Foxconn facility are poised to have a profound positive impact on India's manufacturing sector. It will significantly boost the country's export capabilities, enhance its reputation as a reliable alternative manufacturing base to China, and generate substantial employment opportunities. This development further solidifies India's integration into the global electronics supply chain and fosters economic growth in the region.
