The imperative for domestic energy production
Experts stress that robust coal gasification infrastructure is non-negotiable for India's long-term defense against volatile global energy markets and supply chain disruptions. This strategic pivot is framed not merely as an industrial opportunity but as a cornerstone of national security and economic independence.
Import substitution potential
Balasaheb Darade, MD of New Era Cleantech Solutions, highlighted that a significant portion of India's annual imports, valued at approximately ₹2.77 lakh crore, could be met through domestic coal gasification. This includes vital commodities like LNG, LPG, methanol, ammonia, and urea, fostering self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Learning from global peers
The strategic advantage of domestic coal gasification was underscored by China's experience during recent West Asia crises. While other nations grappled with LNG shortages and price spikes, China's extensive coal-to-chemicals ecosystem provided a buffer, ensuring supply stability and insulating its economy from volatile international markets.
Energy Security and Economic Resilience
Kapil Bansal of EY-Parthenon noted that India's vulnerability to import dependencies, evident in LNG shortages and fertilizer supply issues, necessitates a shift. Coal gasification offers a pathway to secure domestic production of critical fuels and feedstocks, bolstering industrial stability. Pavan Kaushik, a corporate advisor, emphasized that with India importing 89% of its crude oil, reducing external dependence is paramount for long-term economic resilience.
Government Vision and Future Outlook
The government's ambition to achieve 100 million tonnes of coal gasification by 2030 signals a clear strategy to enhance energy security, support domestic manufacturing, and conserve foreign exchange. This long-term vision aims to position India as economically strong, strategically independent, and globally competitive for decades to come.
