Indian Stock Markets Poised for Flat Start Post RBI Policy Review

Indian equity markets are set for a flat opening on August 6, 2026, as investors weigh the Reserve Bank of India’s latest policy decisions against global profit-taking. While international markets show weakness, the RBI's steady repo rate and improved economic forecasts are providing a cushion to domestic sentiment.

Indian stock markets are expected to open flat to marginally higher today, as investors process the latest outcomes from the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee meeting held from August 3 to August 5, 2026. The central bank has opted to maintain the repo rate at 5.25% while continuing with a neutral policy stance. This consistency, combined with positive updates on the economic outlook, provides a layer of stability for domestic trading.

In a move that has provided some comfort to the markets, the RBI has upgraded its real GDP growth forecast for the 2026-27 financial year to 6.7%, up from the previous estimate of 6.6%. Additionally, the central bank has lowered its CPI inflation projection to 5.0% from 5.1%. For investors, these changes signal a resilient domestic economy, which helps in balancing sentiment despite broader global uncertainties.

Global Cues vs Domestic Resilience

While the domestic outlook remains constructive, the broader Asian market landscape is seeing some pressure. Several regional markets have opened lower as traders lock in profits following recent gains, particularly in technology and semiconductor sectors. This global trend of profit-booking often influences short-term sentiment in India, leading to the anticipated flat start for local indices.

Domestic stability is further reflected in the volatility data. The India VIX, which tracks market expectations of volatility, closed at 12.06 on August 5. A lower VIX generally suggests that market participants are not expecting drastic price swings in the immediate future. In the derivatives segment, data shows that the Nifty 50 index has a firm support zone around the 24,500 level, while resistance is forming in the 24,600 to 24,700 range. This suggests that the market may remain in a consolidation phase until a clear directional trigger emerges.

What Investors Should Monitor

With global headwinds, including geopolitical tensions and fluctuating international interest rate expectations, the focus will remain on how these factors interact with domestic growth. Investors will likely watch for the flow of funds from foreign institutional investors, who have been active in the Indian market, to see if they continue to provide support against global selling pressure. Additionally, any new commentary from global central banks or updates on crude oil prices will be relevant for the upcoming trading sessions.
